Do You Actually Need 24/7 IT Support?

Published August 4, 2026 in 24/7 support

The real question isn't 'is downtime bad'

Of course downtime is bad. That's not a useful basis for deciding whether you need round-the-clock coverage, because the real question is what downtime actually costs you at 2am on a Tuesday versus what it costs during business hours, and how often that scenario realistically happens.

When 24/7 coverage earns its cost

24/7 on-call support is worth it when most of these are true:

  • Your service is customer-facing and used outside standard business hours (e-commerce, SaaS with users in other time zones)
  • An outage has a direct, measurable revenue or contractual impact (SLAs with your own customers, for example)
  • You've had after-hours incidents before that sat unresolved until someone noticed the next morning
  • Your infrastructure has few or no redundant systems, so a single failure is a full outage, not a degraded but functioning service

When it's probably not worth it yet

If your systems mainly support internal operations during business hours, a brief after-hours outage that gets fixed first thing in the morning often has minimal real impact. In that case, paying for guaranteed after-hours response is solving a problem that doesn't cost you much when it happens. A reasonable middle ground is defined response times during business hours with a clear escalation path for genuinely urgent, rare exceptions, rather than full always-on coverage.

What matters more than the hours covered

Whichever level of coverage fits, the thing that actually determines whether an outage gets resolved quickly is whether the person responding understands the system, not whether they're technically reachable. A generic help desk with 24/7 hours but no context on your specific setup often takes longer to resolve an issue than a smaller team with direct, documented knowledge of what's actually running. Escalation clarity and response-time targets matter more than raw hours of coverage.
